Wow.. The Synology DS214se is probably the most feature rich network attached storage array out there right now. And that feature set is deep - so deep that I think we'll be coming back to more reviews of this as time goes on.
The DS214se features a gorgeous web based interface that is essentially a GUI for the open source underpinnings of the product. It has a basic text editor and allows for full access to the drive's files from a browser.
But the real magic comes from the package store in that interface, that includes a number of free apps that add some amazing capabilities - like a video app that can work as a DVR with HDHomeRun devices, or a full featured VPN server app complete with OpenVPN, IPsec, and PPTP options, and even a download client that can grab files from bit torrent, http, and even Usenet!
The killer app by far is its syncing features through the Cloud Station app. It's possible to have the drive work exactly like DropBox where files are stored locally on a remote computer and synced automatically back and forth to the drive whenever a change is made. It can do this syncing to other Synology drives but also to mobile devices and even DropBox and Google Drive accounts.
Backup is very robust too, including the ability to back up to external drives incrementally and Amazon Glacier!
