See my review of the Synology system here:
We all know that the best way to protect data from disaster is to back it up and take the backups off site. And the reason of course is that if your office burns down or floods, the very fragile hard drives holding that data will be destroyed along with everything else.
The IOSafe 214 is one way to perhaps give your data a fighting chance. This is essentially a fire and flood proof safe that encapsulates two hard disk drives inside connected to a very nicely performing Synology DS214 network attached storage system. And it's heavy - about 30 pounds heavy thanks to its solid metal and ceramic components.
The drives are contained inside an airtight chamber that keeps them completely isolated from the exterior of the enclosure. Heat is dissipated through passive heat sinks and a fan that carries the heat away in the back. The fan doesn't make that much noise and the amount of material between the drives and the outside world means there isn't much disk noise either.
The Synology DS214 powering the device is an awesome NAS platform, complete with a powerful web-based user interface and very fast read and write speeds. In my testing, even in RAID 1 (mirroring the disks), the drive regularly delivered read and write speeds in the 100 megabytes per second range.
This is a great product that combines a very capable NAS with the most rugged storage enclosure out there. If your data needs to be protected this is a great way to do it.
