This is a nice little drive array that is completely powered by the Thunderbolt cable - no power adapter is needed. On board are two 2 terabyte drives that can be configured as a "scary" high performance RAID 0 configuration (the default). The RAID 0 configuration provides the fastest speed and most capacity, but losing a single drive will result in the entire array being destroyed. So it's important to keep good backups if using this mode for mission critical activities.
A safer RAID 1 configuration is also available which mirrors one drive to the other. This results in half the performance and half the storage, but provides redundancy that will keep data readable even if one of the two drives fail. A third "JBOD" configuration where two distinct hard drives can be mounted on the desktop is another option.
In my tests the drive was able to sustain read and write speeds at approximately 200-210 megabytes per second in RAID 0, and about half that in the mirror RAID 1 configuration.
The RAID array is managed by the operating system, although WD includes a nice utility to simplify the process of configuring the drive. It was also nice to see some diagnostic tools included with the utility to ensure there are no bad sectors on the drives.
This is a really solid device that is great for field activities where performance and huge capacity is needed.
