Elgato Thunderbolt 2 Dock Review - HDMI, USB 3.0, audio, thunderbolt 1TS108901002

This is a decent dock with three USB 3.0 ports, gigabit ethernet, 4k capable HDMI (with a compatible computer), one free Thunderbolt port, and analog audio inputs and outputs. It measures up well with other competing docks out there. It is reasonably priced (as docks go) and has the added value of an included cable.
Performance is good and on par with other docks out there. Gigabit ethernet speeds are good and the HDMI performed as expected. Audio sounds fine but not as good as the Mac's internal headphone port.
Like other docks it is also a bit hindered by the components used to drive its USB interface. It's not slow by any stretch, but it's not as fast as it could be and will be slower than the Mac's internal USB controller. It'll max out at around 2.5 gigabits per second and all three ports are on the same controller - meaning that heavy usage on one port will slow the other two down.
This is not a huge issue for most users as the speed differences for standard file transfer tasks will not be noticeable. But if you're buying this in the hopes of getting the full USB 3.0 throughput out of the dock you will be disappointed. To be fair, no dock on the market even comes close to utilizing what Thunderbolt can offer but it's about time somebody makes a dock that does.
That said this is a good dock for what most people will use it for. It's smaller than the first generation docks I've used and requires no installation steps other than plugging it in. I also like that it includes the cable.
