Lisa Gade reviews the Apple Watch. We look at the 38mm Sport model that starts at $350 with an aluminum casing, Ion-X glass and a fluoroelastomer band. It’s also available in stainless steel with sapphire glass starting around $550, and there’s the 18k gold “Watch Edition” for $10,000 and up. Apple offers a variety of leather, link stainless steel bands and a Milanese band that you can order with the watch or purchase separately later (it’s very easy to swap bands). You must have an iPhone to use the Apple Watch and the phone and watch communicate over Bluetooth and WiFi. The Watch provides notifications piped over from the iPhone and it has a speaker and mic so you can use it to make and receive calls. You can install 3rd party apps (3,000 available at launch) to get breaking news, sports scores, messages, games and more on the Watch. The Apple Watch has advanced fitness trackers for a variety of exercise types and a heart rate monitor. It’s water resistant and even the Sport model is durable and scratch-resistant. It has haptic (vibration) alerts and feedback and of course you can send your heartbeat to a fellow watch user, animated emojis and more.
