Mark Millar came up with the idea for Supercrooks while wondering why supervillains commit all their robberies in Gotham City where Batman is so brilliant at catching them, so he wanted them to go somewhere where the cops are much less effective like Spain. The concept was picked up very quickly by Marc Platt Productions who Mark made the movie Wanted with. Nacho Vigalondo, who has great experience working with lower-budget films, was then brought on as director. Mark compares Nacho to director Duncan Jones who made the indie film Moon before making the bigger-budget Source Code. Mark and Nacho wrote the screenplay over two weeks in Mark's house.
Mark Millar talks about screenwriting vs writing comics and how he hand-drew his own comics when he was five years old and how it was his lifetime ambition to work in comics.
