This is an excellent camera for those looking to go beyond the basics but not quite ready to make a multi-thousand dollar investment in an SLR and nice lenses. The price of the camera is competitive with that of mid-range SLRs with kit lenses and I think this is a good alternative for beginners - especially with the bonus of 4k video recording. The video out of this device is beautiful, especially when editing it down to 1080p.
The 4k video is good, although I noticed a tendency for some 'jelly vision' (also known as rolling shutter) when using the camera handheld and zoomed in. This was an issue I noticed with early attempts at video on SLR cameras and not unexpected for a first generation 4k camera.
The camera itself is quite nice, with surprisingly decent image quality, dynamic range, and sharpness at all focal lengths. The low light capability is adequate and on par with more expensive mid-range SLR cameras.
I really like how it's easy it is to use the camera in manual mode with complete control over ISO, aperture, and shutter settings. There's no fussing with menus, and a simple dial is all that's needed to make real time adjustments. It also has a very nice manual focusing system with a large focus ring around the lens.
I wouldn't recommend this for professionals. It's not possible to get real time video output over the HDMI. And while the 4k video is very nice, it does suffer from a bit of "jellyvision" (also known as rolling shutter) with fast moving objects or handheld shots. Pros will also want the flexibility of interchangeable lenses that an SLR might bring.
Panasonic did a nice job here, I am excited to see what comes next for consumer 4k video!
