See my Asus Chromebox videos here:
HP released a statement on the fanless issue: "The HP Chromebox was inadvertently messaged as "fanless" on the HP website and has since been corrected. Customer satisfaction is of the utmost importance to HP and we apologize for any confusion this may have caused."
Very important - despite HP's claims in their marketing materials, the HP Chromebox IS NOT FANLESS. It has a fan that becomes apparent the minute the box is switched on. Although it's not terribly loud, the noise is there. So if looking at the Asus and this one, note that they both have fans and will both make about the same level of noise while in operation.
From a hardware and performance standpoint, the HP Chromebox is almost identical in every way to the product of the same name from Asus. The entry model reviewed here has the same processor, RAM, storage, and even ports as the competing model from Asus.
So what's the difference? Aesthetics mostly, and a $10 premium for the HP model. HP also makes higher end versions of this Chromebox, including a decked out i7 edition. But if high end specs are something you're looking for, my suggestion would be researching an Intel NUC or other mini-PC that will be a little easier to add additional operating systems, RAM, and storage to.
HP needs to update their marketing materials ASAP, as I suspect many people will be considering this device for the claimed fanless operation.
