Buy it on Amazon - (affiliate link) - The Acer Aspire S7 is a fast performer thanks to its 5th generation Intel i7 Broadwell processor. But I am a little apprehensive about its SSD storage system.
My apprehension comes from the fact that the S7 relies upon a strange RAID 0 configuration to speed up its SSDs (something that's not really necessary).
The issue here is that if either one of the two drives that make up its 256 gigabytes of available storage fails, both drives fail as they are dependent on one another. This just adds an unnecessary failure point to improve the S7's benchmarks. Yes the drive is fast, but most people aren't going to notice the difference between this riskier configuration and a traditional single drive SSD.
Another issue is with the keyboard. Despite the fact that there's plenty of room on the casing for additional keys they completely left out the function key row. Users must instead press the function key and then hit a number to get the function key to submit. It's annoying and pointless given that there was plenty of room for that row of keys.
But the performance of this machine, given its i7 5th generation Intel chip, is great. It is extremely fast especially for data intensive tasks like complicated spreadsheets, code compiling, databases, etc. It's fairly reasonably price given that it is running with that i7 chip. It does lack a discrete GPU which knocks its gaming prowess down a bit, but less complicated or older games like Minecraft or Counterstrike should run nicely on here.
The build quality is nice and it's very thin. Just be sure to keep a good backup.
