Gaming Sin's "Everything Wrong With Assassin's Creed Unity":
Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings INTERACTIVE VIDEO:
Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings Game Movie:
Assassin's Creed Unity might be one of the best and worst games we've ever encountered. It can be so incredibly frustrating, but mostly because you see so much potential in it. First let me say that they story is great, if you've liked past Assassin's Creed stories you should like this one. The issue is not so much the story, but more so how the game plays. Although my one gripe with the story is that I wish they had incorporated Revolutionary France more into the main story. While the setting is prominent and always present in the game, the story is more about Arno than it is about the historical setting. Which is fine, but when the setting is so rich with opportunities, you can't help but feel like a little bit of a missed opportunity on that front.
Arno feels clunky at times, you'll find yourself constantly fighting against the controls to have him do what you want. He often targets someone you didn't intend to in the middle of fights. In the same token, the new free-running controls can feel so fluid that you'll find Arno pulling off jaw dropping parkour moves that make you feel like an acrobatic super hero. Unity is a long list of highs and lows. On the one hand, Paris is absolutely and utterly stunning. The first time you climb to the top of a building to synchronize a part of the city, you'll be awestruck as the camera does a 360 turn of the city. It's breathtaking. Graphics are the best in the series, and look astounding. But for all that beauty, there is a lot of random texture pop in, or characters disappearing altogether. It's clear that this game was not done. WIth an extra year of polish, this might have been one of the greatest games ever made. For example, the city feels alive and vibrant, as you'll see NPC's EVERYWHERE. It feels like a full functioning city. Some scenes literally have thousands of people in the crowd. You'd think that'd be fun, but with so many people, when you try to run through a crowd, you'll find yourself awkwardly barreling over NPC's, which seems fun at first, but takes away from the fluidity of the game. Thinking about it, in scenes like these, I would have added another run button, one that goes a lot slower, but would allow Arno to fluidly maneuver through a large crowd, then when you had some free space, you could use the regular run. Perhaps this is not a perfect solution, but I'm just throwing out suggestions. Little issues like these add up, and while the game is still great, it really holds back the overall product.
For all it's faults, you can't help but feel excited for the future of the Assassin's Creed franchise. Playing in a city with so many NPC's just creates this sense of aliveness, and urgency that none of us have ever felt in any game, EVER BEFORE. The graphics, while buggy, are amazing when they work properly. Unity is definitely a transitional game. Assassin's Creed IV was also on the "next-gen" consoles, but it was definitely developed from the last generation. Unity has new ideas, that once perfected, will enhance the Assassin's Creed experience and truly utilize the new console's power.
SUBTITLES are off because no matter what we did, they would not stay sync'd with the game. We decided it was best to start over and turn them off because they became a distraction. As always we included relevant gameplay, in game dialogue and cutscenes to create one fluid cinematic experience. We hope you enjoy, and make sure to like, comment and share!
