This year’s Google I/O keynote showed off new features for Android, gave insight into what developers will expect from the internet giant, and revealed a small number of surprises. Here are the highlights.
For 2015 Google is getting back to its roots and making search easier. Google Now on Tap promises to simplify using your mobile device by quickly serving up helpful info. Pressing and holding home button will activate Now on Tap, and based on what's on your screen, or what you're listening to, it will guess at how to best assist you. Examples are pulling up movie reviews based on a friend's invitation to see said movie, or creating a reminder from an incoming text.
Banking on the phrase, "third time's a charm", free and unlimited photo plus video storage is available today with Google Photos. It's better than both Picasa and Google+ Photos for sure because the service works across Android, iOS, and Web, plus it will store unlimited 16 megapixel stills and 1080p video.
Making virtual reality a consumer technology isn’t easy. With Jump, Google will provide creators plans to make 360 degree camera rigs, assemble the video, and show it on YouTube. GoPro is on board too providing an off the shelf rig for its cameras.
Google Cardboard is finally coming to iOS, with support for 6 inch screens. With a program called Expeditions it’s also taking classrooms full of students to far off lands.
In the "catching up to the crowd" category, the new Android Pay platform will square off against Apple Pay in the smartphone payment arena. The Internet of Things is also on Google’s radar, with Android based OS Brillo, and the new Weave communication standards. With Apple’s HomeKit, Zigbee, and Z-Wave already fighting for market share, it's going to be a tough fight for Google.
Google maps offline will soon deliver not just maps, but location information and turn by turn directions, all without an internet connection.
