SOUTH PARK: THE STICK OF TRUTH PREVIEW (E3 2013)
At a preview event a few weeks ago Andrea Rene got the chance to check out a demo for South Park: The Stick of Truth, the RPG being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and formerly being published by the now debunk THQ.
The game but it follows basic RPG principles. You'll play as The New Kid, a silent protagonist that you can customize through 5 playable classes including the Mage, the Fighter, and the Jew. There will be a Facebook styled interface where you can connect with other students at the school and oversee your inventory and skill rankings.
Matt Stone and Trey Parker have written the game themselves along with voicing several characters for the game. So it is no surprise the New Kid's magical abilities are farting. He farts to kill people and can even perform attacks like Cup-A-Spell where he throws farts at enemies that explode on impact.
You'll have access to homemade looking weapons like the ranged slingshot plus magical abilities like the Mystical Power of the Underpants Gnomes that allows you to shrink yourself to fit into tight areas.
The combat is turn-based allowing you to set up attacks on enemies through an abilities wheel. There are many types of attacks including Funnel of Frost which extinguishes flames, or you can make your own with Dragon's Breath. There will also be timed inputs to block and counter enemy attacks.
You'll play with companions for certain quests, like Butters who has the "Healing Touch" for when the combat gets too intense. You'll see Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, and Stan throughout the game.
There will also be dozens of references to other popular RPGs including Skyrim. At one point the New Kid is known as the Dragonborn and can learn a Dragon Shout power.
