Soundbars. They're a convenient alternative to a speaker system, achieved by putting speakers into a bar. You wouldn't expect much scope for radical ideas.
But that's exactly what Philips has come up with. The HTL9100 looks like a regular soundbar with a wireless subwoofer, but its sides can be jettisoned, like an escape pod, to act as rear satellite speakers.
It's a really good idea, and it works brilliantly. If it's immersive sound you're after, there's no substitute for actually being surrounded by speakers. With the Philips, that's what you get. The bar is clever enough to switch to a standard 5.1 signal once the satellites detach.
