The lively town of Kanchanaburi straddles the Mae Klong River in northern Thailand. When you first arrive, you might be surprised by its breezy, temperate climate, particularly if you’ve just arrived from the humid coastal region. Kanchanaburi’s mountainous border keeps its temperature warm and pleasant year-round, and that can be a welcome change from the heat simmering at Thailand’s famous beaches.
This community is both a regional commercial center and within easy access of a variety of historical and natural attractions. A Kanchanaburi tour must include a stop at the night market, which is located near the train station. Purchase delicious local fare, check out the offerings from the area’s artistic community, and get to know some of the citizens of this lively town.
Kanchanaburi was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and there are numerous museums and memorials for you to add to your itinerary while you’re in the area. Pay a visit to the Hellfire Pass Museum, which commemorates part of the “Death Railway” that was built by Allied prisoners of war. If you’ve seen the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai,” then you already have an idea of what the conditions were like. You can also cross the titular bridge from that movie, which has since been partially rebuilt.
Ready to experience the natural beauty Kanchanaburi is famed for? Climb aboard a Nam Tok Line train to wind your way through the gorgeous, jungle-clad mountains. If you look out the window, you’ll find the steep rock sides of the mountains just an arm’s length away. Your Kanchanaburi sightseeing must include a stop at Erawan National Park, located deep in the forest. This is the place where you get to see some of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, as well as mosey along sunlit streams.
