A tour of Kuching, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, is a journey into a colorful, adventurous place you’ll never forget.
The moment you arrive, you’ll learn that Kuching sightseeing is best done from the Sarawak River, which flows past the city. You can embark on a kayak tour and paddle up the river as part of a group, viewing parts of the city that have remained unchanged for decades, nestled in miles of emerald jungle. Once you’ve returned from your trip up the river, immerse yourself in Kuching’s downtown area. Don’t be fooled by the city’s very modern skyline; beneath the towering buildings is Old Kuching, full of thriving markets, shop houses, and narrow lanes that look much the same as they did a century ago.
Kuching roughly translates to “The Cat City,” and you may be slightly disappointed by the under-abundance of felines roaming about. While Malaysians consider cats good luck, the city is not infested with furry friends. If you’ve come to Kuching for cats, though, you can still check out the Cat Museum of Kuching, which is devoted to all things feline.
Like the cats it’s named after, when the sun goes down, Kuching comes alive. Join residents and fellow travelers in the city’s many pubs, restaurants, and cafes that line the banks of the Sarawak River and enjoy the evening until the stars fade from the sky.
