This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Lindsey, Debbie Sterling's first hire at GoldieBlox, poses the question; "What would happen if we put as much value on what we're great at as we do on what we're paid for?" This penetratingly human talk on what it means to 'be' something finishes with the amazing space that opens up when you give youth a chance to answer that question with authenticity.
Lindsey Shepard was Debbie Sterling's first hire at GoldieBlox, a toy company that created a book series & construction set that engages kids to build through the story of Goldie, the girl inventor who solves problems by building simple machines. Lindsey, a mother of two young kids herself, holds the title of Rainmaker and Resident Mom at GoldieBlox. She has spent the last several years performing one "life-hack" after another, proving that engineering is a lifestyle, not just a degree. Lindsey has made it her mission to empower women to recognize that they are much more than the titles on their business cards or their appointed position on the PTA. She hopes to reach the women who are raising the girls of GoldieBlox in order to encourage them to embrace their natural inclination toward innovation and invention.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
