Let me explain a pithy comment I made in this video that I must have worded in a way so that it doesn't translate well or makes me sound flippant or arrogant - this was not my intention.
The sentence in question is where I say at the 1 min 7 sec mark "although I've been driving for 20 years and I've never crashed into anything, so you would have to use it an awful lot of be a very bad driver to get the use out of it that it's intended for".
People regularly comment, that it's not down to how I drive, it's the other drivers...or words to that effect. This is misunderstanding the sentiment that I was trying to convey, so let me elaborate on the message that I was trying to get across.
Have you seen those Russian car crash videos on youtube, they are crazy aren't they. It makes you think that everyone in Russia must be crashing all the time. How about the Worlds Scariest Police Chases....they always show lots of amazing crashes. Some people buy these cameras thinking that in no time they'll have an amazing car crash video that they can post on youtube or sell to the TV news.
However, ask yourself how many crashes you've actually seen or been involved in whilst driving. and also ask yourself how many of these crashes happened in front of your car so that a camera mounted on the windscreen would have captured the crash on video.
As I say in the video, I've been driving since 1989, in that time I've seen a handful of low speed crashes. I saw one head on crash at a junction whilst I was waiting at the lights, that's probably the most spectacular one because the airbags went off in the cars concerned. .If a camera like this had existed in 1989 and I'd installed it in my cars and always recorded every single journey I had made up until today I still would have missed those crashes. They all happened in positions that a camera pointing out of the front window wouldn't have seen. So understand what I'm saying here...I'm not being flippant or arrogant, I'm just saying that the odds of capturing a crash on a camera like this is minuscule, all I was attempting to do was to give potential purchasers a realistic expectation.
So to explain my comment about having to be a bad driver to get the proper use out of this camera. What I am saying here is that the only way you can 100% Guarantee that you will capture a crash on video with this camera is to deliberately create the crash yourself. If I mount this car in my front window and then drive into a wall.... I've caught a crash on camera.
So will you record a crash with this camera, well anything is possible, but it's more than likely that the camera will wear out first. However as a cheap action camera this was an OK device back when I made this video...but better devices have come out since - check out my other videos.
Hopefully this makes it easier to understand and will stop me getting abusive messages from people who didn't understand the message I was trying to convey.
All the best,
Mat.
