Atmospheric pressure at the surface of the icy dwarf is surprisingly low. Previous Earth-based estimates were more than double New Horizons’ reading. As Pluto climbs away from the Sun, in its highly eccentric orbit, gases may be freezing and "falling to the surface,” according to New Horizons' team member Amy Shira Teitel.
