The BMW 6 Series is big, luxurious and well-rounded enough to take on competition from the Audi A5, the Jaguar XK and the Porsche 911. It's a capable GT car designed to cross continents in record time, with enough room for four people and all their luggage. In diesel trim, it's incredibly economical, too.
Mat: Got a continent to cross and want to do it in style, comfort and very very quickly -- well there's not many cars better for that task than the BMW 6 Series.
It's a striking looking machine thanks to its low slung body and sloping roof line while the aggressive face will help bully other drivers out of the way. Still at least they will be able to admire it's pert rear end although, obviously not for very long.
Speaking of the back end, it may look short but there's actually plenty of room in the boot. There's also a ski hatch, which is handy for those who plan a trip to the Alps -- well so long as you don't snowboard as that won't fit. But then this is more of a car for skiers than boarders.
Inside the 6 Series is a beautiful place to sit. The interior design is very modern, the build quality is solid and the car oozes luxury from every single pore.
There's leather absolutely everywhere, here on the dash, here on the door trims, here on the arm rest. That just adds to the premium feel. So does the super comfy seats which are heated and electrically adjustable as is the steering column. All cars also get stuff like parking sensors, which you will need due to the sheer size of the thing, dual zone climate so you don't argue with your passenger over what temperature is best and sat-nav with traffic updates to stop you arguing about which is the best route to take. And considering this is a coupe, storage is pretty good too.
As you'd imagine the BMW 6 Series is a very quick car -- especially if you go for the twin-turbo V8 petrol. But if you are crossing continents you'll be slowed down with numerous fuel stops. The smart person's choice is the 3.0-litre straight six twin turbo diesel and here's why -- it does 0-62mph in just over 5 seconds, it has amazing low down shove, it sounds good yet, and best of all, it can return around 50 miles per gallon which is about the same economy as a 1.6-litre Vauxhall Astra.
The 6 Series is a very relaxing car to travel in because it is quiet, the eight-speed auto gearbox is smooth and it's very comfy. It's even better if you get a car with the adaptable drive package as that has a comfort mode, which slackens off the suspension. Thing is though that system costs over three grand and you are going to need that if you want the 6 Series to drive as well as it can because it also includes a sport mode which not only stiffens up the suspension but uses active anti roll bars to keep the car completely flat through corners.
However, despite the fact the 6 series has good body control, plenty of grip and sharp steering it's still not as fun to drive as a Porsche 911.
And despite being a whole heap bigger and heavier, it's barely much better for carrying people in the back. Still if that's what you want to do there's always the 6 Series Gran Coupe which is longer and has rear doors, though that's still not as Spacious as a Porsche Panamera.
To many people this BMW will be a more attractive option not only because it looks sweeter but it's less costly too -- especially in the case of this super efficient yet super fast 640d diesel model.
