Welcome to Budapest, the capital city of Hungary.
Widely reputed to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Budapest has a rich history that goes back to the Neolithic era. Most Budapest tourism is quite modern, though; the city has an excellent public transit system and is also easy to explore on foot. To get a taste of the many cultures that have inhabited this area, head down Andrassy Avenue to Heroes’ Square, the largest square in Budapest. This public space is adorned with statues and pillars celebrating the long history of the city. You’ll also find the Museum of Fine Arts nearby, a massive neoclassical structure containing over 100,000 creative works.
Your Budapest sightseeing will get you in touch with the city’s royal roots when you arrive at District 8, several miles south of Heroes’ Square. This is the “Palace Neighborhood,” where the wealthy families of the Austro-Hungarian empire built their towering homes throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. These former residences are now hotels, museums, and learning institutions, and you can stroll through their striking neighborhoods and marvel at the massive structures. Getting hungry? Stop for lunch in nearby Mikszáth Square, where you can sit down at a restaurant or café to fill up.
As night falls, the lights of Budapest wink on one by one. This city loves the later hours, so if you’re a night owl, you’ll be right at home. You’ll find a variety of clubs, restaurants, and shops that open when the stars come out. If you’re feeling adventurous, look up one of the city’s famous “ruinpubs,” which are bars and eateries opened in the ruins of old buildings or even vehicles. You might just have the meal of your life.
