It's amazing how fast the network attached storage device market is moving. Pretty soon these will no longer be appliances and simply become specialty PC's.
The Asustor AS-202TE is a reasonably priced device that features fairly functional NAS features coupled with the ability to plug it into a television for media playback. It also is powered by an Intel Atom processor similar to what can be found on Windows 8 tablets and netbooks. This particular device runs its own flavor of Linux.
Does it work? Yes, but there are some limitations. I had some issues playing back Blu Ray MKVs using the drive's bundled version of XBMC. Additionally the on board Plex server just can't keep up with the demands that real time encoding requires.
Part of the problem is that it only has a gigabyte of available RAM. I suspect that having it perform as a NAS file server in addition to being a media player will take its toll on resources. After activating the NAS feature I watched the RAM available to the system drop to approximately 680 megabytes (it shares that memory with the video hardware to run the HDMI output), so there's really not a lot to even start with.
Bottom line? It's not the end-all media player. If you're playing back smaller files that don't require a lot of transcoding it might work well. But for those of us looking for a large home theater PC/storage array you'll need to keep looking.
