Hobby King Das Ugly Stik - "Frankenplane"
This plane belonged to my friend Paul who very generously donated it to me after I crashed it and ripped the front of it off. Since that crash, the plane has been sitting in my garage collecting dust for probably over a year. Well, recently I lost my beloved Tundra in a crash and unfortunately it could not be repaired. However, there are always things that can be saved from a crashed plane; servos, motors, ESCs, spars, landing gear, etc.. All depending on their condition after the crash, of course. In this case, I was able to cut off the nose of the Tundra, trim it to suit and attach it to the front of the Ugly Stik. Now, because the Ugly Stik has a rather long nose with a fake plastic nitro motor what added some nose weight, when I glued the Tundra nose further back towards the wings the CG of the plane went off (it was very tail heavy). This is why there are 4AA batteries taped on the nose of the lane; to gain the correct CG. I will eventually swap these out for some proper lead weights when I can get them.
I attached the nose by inserting 4 little spars into the fose (2 on each side of the fuselage), a fair amount of 30min epoxy glue and finished it off with a lot of hot glue along the edges and a mixture of carbon-fibre tape and Bear tape (fibre tape) to secure it all in place.
I'm using the Tundra motor and a Durafly 50amp ESC. The prop is from the Pilatus PC-9 and goes straight on without any mods required. Total amps drawn on a 3S 2200mah is around 45amps and although I can't remember the watts, I can tell you it has great power and speed.
This plane may not look that good, but what it lacks in looks makes up for in performance. I'm still in shock that this mash-up has worked and worked brilliantly. It just flies so damn well.
Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video. :)
