For a peek into history, pay a visit to Dunluce Castle, located on the coast of Northern Ireland. This crumbling medieval stronghold was first constructed in the 13th century, though historians believe it was built over the bones of an even older Irish fort. The castle changed hands and was often modified until the 1600s, after which it was largely abandoned.
Dunluce Castle perches atop a basalt cliff, and is accessible only via a narrow bridge. A Dunluce Castle tour is a great opportunity to explore the ruins, which include two drum towers—the distinctive round protrusions seen on so many castles. Wander across the old cobblestone courtyard and look out over the sea, or make your way down the steps to the wishing well. Whatever you do, don’t forget to stop by the mermaid’s cave during your Dunluce Castle sightseeing. The cave is a remarkable natural cathedral located beneath the fortress; stand still and listen—can you hear the ghosts of the sailors reportedly stranded in here?
If you’d really like a taste of the castle’s lore, book a guided tour in advance to learn about some of the local myths and legends. You may even get to hear about the recently rediscovered Dunluce Town that is currently being excavated.
