A trip to Kinsale Harbor, Ireland, should include sightseeing at Charles Fort.
This star-shaped military base, built in the 1670s and 1680s, was constructed over the remains of Ringcurran Castle. The star shape aided in defending against cannon fire, which by the 1600s had rendered previous fort and castle designs vulnerable to its power. Charles Fort, named for King Charles II, saw action in the Williamite War, where it was besieged by John Churchill. After the war ended, the fort was used as a barracks for two centuries.
Your Charles Fort tour will include a look into some of the surviving buildings. A walk around the premises will give you a good idea of what life was like for a soldier on duty at the fort, and there’s also an interpretive center where you can learn more about its background. The fort itself is located in the perfect spot to take pictures, so if you’re a shutterbug, remember to bring your camera! You’ll get some outstanding shots of the harbor and the surrounding area, and you can even pose with some old cannons.
Once you’re done exploring Charles Fort, wander around the rest of Kinsale Harbor at your leisure. Enjoy some fresh-caught seafood, purchase souvenirs from the boutiques, or just breathe in the sea air.
