A visit to Crumlin Road Gaol is a unique opportunity to explore a piece of history.
This forbidding building opened in 1845 and closed in 1996, and it is the lone remaining Victorian gaol in Northern Ireland. It stands across the road from the old Crumlin Road Courthouse, which is no longer in use. An underground tunnel connects the two complexes, and prisoners often went back and forth to stand trial.
Over the course of its 150-year history, Crumlin Road Gaol saw over 25,000 prisoners pass through its walls, a handful of which staged escape attempts. You can learn about these escape attempts and the gaol’s history of executions during your Crumlin Road Gaol sightseeing; we recommend checking with the gaol to find out when guided tours are available. In addition, the facility also hosts conferences and concerts throughout the year.
