Ten days ago I warned the South Waikato District Council of the increased risk of aircraft landing unannounced when the runway was closed and in use by non-aviation groups. The Mayor dismissed my concerns, claiming she had "faith" that pilots would do the right thing. I disagreed strongly with her assertion.
Today, Sunday 26th November, a Cessna from the Ardmore Flight School landed on the closed runway without performing a standard rejoin and seemingly without using its radio -- surprising the local car club who using the airfield for testing their timing equipment and running some pre-race drag-runs.
The potential for damage, injury or worse was significant.
This is just the latest in a growing number of such incidents at the airfield in which flying schools figure prominently. The last one was earlier this year when another aircraft from the same flight school landed on a closed runway in the middle of a large RC jet meeting. Video of that incident can be seen here:
The council has no effective strategy for manging the risk that flight schools pose to the safety of other users of the Tokoroa Airfield despite being advised of the risks on multiple occasions.
I have done by best to alert the council to the risks but I am ignored in favour of advice from the likes of Mr Anderson, their Group Asset Manager who admits he knows nothing about aviation and has proven it on multiple occasions.
