On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, piloting the spacecraft Friendship 7. This archival film from NASA captures the exhilarating moments before from Cape Canaveral and the dramatic rocket launch, with views inside the capsule, in mission control, and from the New Frontier of outer space. Hear the famous words uttered just seconds before launch by Scott Carpenter, Glenn's backup astronaut for the mission, "Godspeed, John Glenn."
