Apple has finally introduced a game controller standard with iOS7, so we can finally get real hardware controls for games that really don't perform well on a touch screen. Logitech is one of the first out of the gate with the PowerShell.
The hardware is good. I am seeing a lot of consternation over the gamepad in other reviews but I found it to be firm and responsive. I suppose it's a matter of taste and what you're used to, but for me I found it good for playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and a few other retro games that support the controller. The controller is comfortable and it's nice to finally play a game without my thumbs getting in the way!
The iPhone can very easily be placed in an out of the shell. I found some inconsistency with the battery charging function as it didn't always begin charging the phone when I moved the switch to the on position.
What could be better? It's understandably wide with a device installed, but it would have been nice if the controller could collapse into something smaller when not in use. Additionally the controller is not future proof - whatever new phone design Apple comes up with next will not be compatible with the controller since it fits the iPhone 5 and 5s so precisely. Even the iPhone 5c won't work with it! iPad use is also out of the question as the Powershell interfaces with the iOS device via the lightning port and not with Bluetooth. Also keep in mind that older games that have not been updated for iOS 7 game controllers will not work with this one even if they might work with other controllers based on the iCade format.
Logitech does deserve kudos for a generous 3 year warranty. It is nice to see a company willing to stand by the quality of their products.
My advice? If you're not hot to trot on a game controller give it some time. Most controllers now are coming in at the Powershell's high price point and I think we'll see less expensive alternatives in the near future that will drive down costs.
