I finally had to give in and buy a new Taranis X9D Special Edition to replace my trusty X9D+ after 2 years. The roll and pitch gimbal was getting very notchy, the momentary switch has packed up, the battery is tired and I've had an intermittent range issue since it was new.
Although it only happens occasionally, it's really annoying when it does. I thought the 5dB antenna upgrade would fix it. It certainly improved the range overall, but it still would randomly warn about low RSSI. I think there's a lurking problem on the main TX board, so it probably needs replacing at some point.
I did think about buying a Q7 or a Horus, but neither was right for me and I know the X9D pretty well now so there's no need to upgrade for upgrades sake.
The hall effect M9 gimbals work really well and are soooo smooth. Will they improve my flying? Who knows but they are fantastic.
The upgraded switches are nice - very smooth and quiet.
At first I thought the antenna mount had a problem because it was very wobbly, but this turned out to be just a loose SMA nut which was easily fixed.
My only real gripe is FrSky have used the same NiHM cells to power the X9D. Surely the Special Edition would have been a great opportunity to use more suitable LiFe cells, but maybe they have a warehouse full of them that need shifting. Anyway, I'll replace them with my LiFe mod when I get time.
Overall, I'm really happy with the Special Edition and glad I decided to upgrade rather just replace like with like. The carbon look is nice, but the other bright dip coloured aren't for me.
The radio came loaded with the latest firmware and bootloader so to transfer all my model data, scripts and voice packs from the old radio to the new one is straightforward.
I cover in full detail how to do this as well as installing the latest version of Open-TX 2.2.1
At some stage I will replace the worn parts on the old radio. It's still perfectly useable as a backup, but as I see used replacement parts on ebay I'll snap them up and fit them.
