Since this is one of the smaller and slower RCs I decided to let my almost-three-year-old son unbox this one. He really loves the unwrapping process and even more when it involves finding a cool truck inside.
I also decided to leave my usual written commentaries in this video to an absolute minimum and just let the footage speak for itself.
First of all, I must say I am impressed by the scale look and the hard body for this one. The ABS 'High-Imitation U.S. Military Truck' (as WPL names it themselves) plastic body is really stunning for this size/scale and this price! And the tire compound is surprisingly soft, compared to the typically hard-as-stone tires found in most models in this price range.
But the design of the RC underneath also added a lot to my initial curiosity. While the body is mimicking a military truck, the RC design is mimicking a modern 4x4 trail truck or crawler. Don't be fooled though: It is still not a high end hobby mini-crawler! Still, with the high ground clearence, the 4WD with no differential and the soft tires and leaf spring shock absorbers it seems to be doing better off road than other cheap "crawlers" I have seen.
I must admit I am a little concerned about the durability of the RC platform. While the body looks very respectable, the plastic and metal of the actual vehicle do not seem of the highest quality. Maybe I am biased by one particular review I watched where the drive axles broke after 3 minutes run time! I have seen other reviews and tests where it holds up great though.
So far this particular unit is doing great and nothing has broken yet! My son and I have been test running it quite a bit in the living room. Time will tell but for now it has proven to be an awesome addition for the RC hobby. The test run in this video might also be a bit unfair for such a vehicle. I was out at the rocks by the harbor to test run a larger truck. But for the size and price, it actually performed very well on the large rocks! Didn't get stuck, nothing broke and it only rolled over one time where I got too close to the angled descent down to the water. I'm looking forward trying it out outside in a bit more fair environment.
Well ... and the sound of the servo (or whatever it is?) really took me by surprise! Huh. After a little while one gets used to the sound though.
The WPL B-1 is available both as a 'DIY' (kit) and as an RTR model. The body comes in two different plastic colours, khaki and army green. The unit you see here in the video is the khaki RTR model. The kit comes with no other electronics than a servo. I believe this version actually provides a real proportional servo that should work with your proportional radio transmitter/receiver. This RTR version comes with the featured 2.4 GHz radio with proportional throttle but with non-proportional steering.
Maybe it would be fun, for a project, to convert this to standard hobby-grade electronics or do it all from the beginning with the DIY version? I have also seen enthusiasts doing interesting weathering paint jobs and other customizations and modifications.
More of the WPL B-1 to come!
