Talk title: The learning and reputation graph
If Rip Van Winkle were to awaken today after a 100 year sleep, everything would astonish and baffle him, save one thing: our unchanged classrooms. Over the next 100 years, two new concepts are poised to transform the landscape of education - they are the learning graph and the reputation graph. Adaptive learning, for instance an application on an iPad which tailors the pace at which information is presented to individual students, is a potentially disruptive technology that can end testing and assessment as we know it, and allow students to learn at their own speed. The reputation graph measures what people know about the people they know, representing information about interpersonal skills and social influence as seen by those who know us. Data of this type is transforming education. We will generate more data in the next decade in education than we've generated in the entire history of education to this moment.
Jon Bischke is an experienced entrepreneur focused on the intersection of education and technology. He has been on the founding team of five companies, including LearnOutLoud.com and eduFire.com, a leading video platform for online education. Jon is the founder of RG Labs, a company that helps people make better decisions about people. His current work explores the creation of a learning graph, abstracting what a person knows and their relative level of mastery, and a reputation graph which distills what people think of a person, graphs that could be used in combination as a measure of one's knowledge and employability.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxManhattanBeach, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxManhattanBeach event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
