Osmo is an interesting product - learning apps that interact not through touching the iPad screen but with real objects that are placed on a table in front of iPad. A specially designed mirror attaches to the front of the iPad and reflects what's placed on a table or desk into the front facing camera.
The kit comes with two object sets - a box of word tiles for the Words app, and another box with colored shapes for the Tangram app. A third app, Newton, interacts with drawings that the child draws on piece of paper placed in front of the iPad.
All of the games are cool technologically, but each feels like more time was spent on the tech vs. the actual game. Words for example does a poor job of a versus two player experience (it arbitrarily picks winners when both players throw down a letter at the same time).
But from a tech stand point the system feels right. Tangram and Words each properly detect the shape or letter placed in front of the camera. So I have faith that the developers can improve the software over time without having to require changes in the physical objects supplied with the kit.
