From the outside, with similar bodies and identical tires and wheels, the HBX Thruster and HBX Dune Thunder certainly look like a mirror of each other. And I must admit that in this flat environment they performed quite similar, in terms of top speed, acceleration and handling.
Most of that are due to quite similar features. Both are 1/12th scale with a similar wheel base and ground clearance. Both are powered by a 390 Type brushed motor and a 7.4v 2S Li-Ion battery set. Both are equipped with full ball bearings and oil filled shocks. They even have a quite similar front double wishbone suspension.
Everything else, including the chassis, is quite different though. The HBX Thruster is based on a wide "Rock Racer" chassis design with a solid rear axle. It has a 2-speed transmission, controlled by a 3rd channel and a servo. The HBX 12891 Dune Thunder has a rear double wishbone suspension. It focuses on balance with all electronics placed in the middle of a sleek and narrow "Buggy" chassis with a saddle battery pack system. Stock wise, maybe the Dune Thunder is a little faster and a little less top heavy and grounded.
Apart from all that talk about specifications ... the most important thing is that we sure had a lot of fun that day! Young as well as old!
This video was recorded with a Samsung Galaxy S9 Phone. It was recorded in 4K 60 fps and rendered in 1080 60 fps here. I also managed to try out the 'Super Slow Motion' feature that captures 960 fps:
