DC’s El Diablo—also known as Rafael Sandoval, Chato Santana, and Lazarus Lane—is known as both a hero, anti-hero, and even villain in the comic book world. Most recently fans have seen this superhero in the DC cinematic universe’s latest film Suicide Squad, fighting alongside the likes of Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Katana, and Captain Boomerang. El Diablo is a mysterious comic character, so join us as WatchMojo explores all three El Diablo origin stories.

As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginations and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen primarily to follow the storyline which unfolded in 1970’s All-Star Western #2 and which was expanded upon in 1989’s Secret Origins #2, 2006’s Jonah Hex #11 and 2008’s El Diablo #1.
