Tamiya Falcon 1986 Vintage 2WD Buggy Restoration: Bodywork and Repaint

Success or failure ...? I'm not too sure. This is my attempt to get a Tamiya Falcon 58056 from 1986, forgotten in an attic for almost 30 years, back on it's wheels and out in the wild again.
Thank you for watching!

If the object was to get a nice clean full functional Tamiya Falcon Runner I guess it was a success. If the object was to restore it to it's former beauty ... then I guess it was an utterly failure. The good thing is that I do not have to worry scratching or ruining this body when running it from now on.
For those interested in restoring old lexan bodies there are several (disputed) techniques how to remove the old paint. Tamiya, Carson and a lot of other companies also produce paint removers for lexan/polycarbonate bodies. So why is it important to remove the old paint, if you just wanna touch up the old paint with the same color? Well, watch the video and find out. A couple of times I have been lucky just to re-spray a body - a couple of other times, like this one, it was not possible. I guess it depends on the original old paint.
If you want the slightest chance of success the important thing is to apply VERY thin/light coats of new paint and let each coat dry properly before applying the next. If it gets too wet and too thick the new paint will react with the old paint (again, watch the video to see how that looks). It requires a lot of patience ... always at the risk of immediate failure. After this one I think I'm done running the risk. In future projects I will remove the old paint or get a new body to work on.
Previously I have had good success masking off the outside of the body with Tamiya masking tape for re-paints. With this one the old stickers/decals was simply too old and fragile, resulting in some tears in the stickers when removing the masking tape again. Because of this experience, I do not recommend applying masking tape directly on 30 years old decals.
Many times there is also the option to get new bodies and decals from the Tamiya rerelease series. If your models is not rereleased yet, like this Tamiya Falcon, you can try searching for new after market reproduction bodies and decals. Team Blue Groove (TBG on eBay) offers a nice new polycarbonate Falcon body/wing and MCI Racing in Canada offers a nice set of new Falcon decals.
If you're watching and reading this in the years after 2017, there is a very good chance that Tamiya has already re-released The Falcon already.
So, this was a trial-and-error learning proces for me. I hope you can use some of my errors, when deciding what not to do in your next restoration projects. Still, the important thing is to relax and not take it too seriously. Go with the flow. Be happy and enjoy your hobby - even when things get tricky and do not turn out the way you want. I had a lot of fun working with this old Tamiya Falcon. Hope you have enjoyed following along.
