Although it definitly had some flaws and needed some attention it came in a package with some sweet hop-up options including the DF-03 TRF Aluminium Shocks. This was a very good second hand deal I just couldn't allow to pass on, since I've known for some time now, that one day a Tamiya DF-03 would enter my collection. And since this one came with some of my favorite hop-up optional shocks, it was a perfect deal.
This video tells the complete process, from the day it arrived at my door steps to it's first run. As the keen subscriber will know, I have actually already uploaded a few short raw 4K clips from it's first run, including a GPS Speed Test, a few days ago, as part of my series Tamiya Tuesdays.
Since this purchase was not planned at all, this revitalization-project automatically became a really tight budget restoration.
Admittedly, it still has some serious issues. The Ball Differentials seemed to have suffered, especially the rear ball sockets which more or less was "melted", and which I "solved" by tightening the diff, taking it out of action. In my research I discovered that this is a quite common issue with the DF-03 Rear Ball Diff, so I'm not too sure yet how to solve it properly and permantly.
Other issues are of course the body and wing. Since I plan to make my own body for it, from scratch, I really didn't bother with anything else than quickly cleaning up the edges with a knife and scissor, and "hiding" the terrible one-layer paint job with a new set of decals. I'm still not sure which body I would prefer for it. Maybe the Avante Mk.II, but new decals for that one seems hard to come by.
Another issue is the massive blue anodized shock towers from Yeah Racing. They are of great quality and thickness, but for me, visually a bit "too much" and "too massive". Especially the front tower. Since I haven't heard of any serious issues with the front stock shock tower it will probably be re-installed some time in the future, together with a new body. This will also take sonme of the weight off. For the other parts from Yeah Racing, I happen to like them.
Which permanent electronics it eventually will have, is undecided, but it has to be a motor with plenty of RPM since this gear ratio winds out pretty quickly. I would love to hear some suggestions for a good gearing set up.
That's it! Hope you enjoyed the video! Just sharing my first DF-03 experience. More videos with the Tamiya DF-03 coming up this season!
