The period between the 10th century and the middle of the 15th century was marked by a gradual shrinking of the boundaries of the Eastern Roman Empire and a decrease in the political significance of the Byzantine “basileus” (emperor). For the Christian Church in the East, this was a time of difficult trials, caused both by the Crusades and by the conquests of the Seljuk Turks. Moreover, part of the Christian population lived on lands conquered by the Arabs.
