1. Love and hate it
His first acting role was a commercial for the fabric softener Lenor in 1982.
2. Do the thing you're good at
In 1984, he made his stage debut in The Nerd on London's West End with Rowan Atkinson.
3. Create what you like
He made his film debut as Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich of Russia in the made for television film Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna.
4. Don't be a one trick pony
His performance as Jim Graham in Empire of the Sun (1987) earned him widespread critical praise.
5. Always be prepared
He has been described in the media as one of the most versatile and talented actors of his generation.
6. Dedicate yourself to your craft
By the end of filming The Machinist, he weighed only 121 pounds, a transformation he described as "very calming mentally".
7. Do it to the hilt
In 2004, after completing filming for The Machinist, he won the lead role of Batman.
8. Work with passionate people
He gained a total of 100 lb (45 kg) in six months for his role as Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins.
9. Just do it!
His portrayal of Dicky Eklund in the biographical film The Fighter, earned him critical acclaim and a number of awards.
10. Don't get complacent
In 2011, he was listed among the Time 100, a compilation of the 100 most influential people in the world selected by Time.
