Kindle Fire Unboxing
At long last, the Kindle Fire has launched. Ever since its unveiling back in September, the device has been hyped up as true, honest to goodness competition for the iPad -- and for good reason. Not only does it have Amazon's robust ecosystem of music, movies and books going for it, but the device is priced at an extremely consumer friendly $200. Apple will definitely have some questions to address going forward when it comes to price, especially if Amazon's tablet is as successful as the figures suggest. In the long term, though, will the Fire have what it takes to ignite the market and disrupt the iPad's dominance? Or will it fizzle out and concede to Apple's almighty tablet?
Excited doesn't even come close to explaining how much we were looking forward to the Kindle Fire. Amazon already had our attention when the device was first announced, but making it $200? We were sold.
The first thing of note is that the Kindle Fire looks and feels very much like RIM's PlayBook tablet, but in our eyes it's not a particularly bad thing. Amazon reportedly used the PlayBook as their design reference when producing the Fire. At just 7-inches, the cloud connected device sports 8GB of internal storage (no SD card slot), weighs in at 14.6 ounces, 1GHz dual-core OMAP 4 processor, 512MB RAM and 8 hours of continuous reading or 7.5 hours video playback (with Wi-Fi off).
Amazon uses a completely customized version of Android 2.3 that is unrecognizable compared to other Android tablets. During our initial use we found the Fire's UI to be intuitive and easy to navigate which should make for easy media consumption. We'll go more in depth with the Amazon's "forked" Android UI in a later video.
It's sure been a long month and a half of anticipation, and we can't wait to dive deeper into what is shaping up to be one of the biggest tablets on the market. Stay tuned for more Fire coverage, and be sure to watch the unboxing video.
