Pack mules still have a role in the digital age. The US Forest Service uses them to supply wildland fire crews in the remote areas of northern California. While environmental laws forbid the use of helicopters, planes and trucks in designated wilderness areas, the performance of these beasts of burden in such extreme conditions of the country stand on there own. Modern-day horseman attest to their stamina, temperament and charisma as man and mule alike continue a tradition that began nearly two centuries ago.
