Windsurfing is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. It consists of a board usually 2.5 to 3 meters long, with displacements typically between 60 and 250 litres, powered by wind on a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating universal joint and consists of a mast, boom and sail. The sail area generally ranges from 2.5 m2 to 12 m2 depending on the conditions, the skill of the sailor, the type of windsurfing being undertaken and the weight of the person windsurfing.
The inventor of windsurfing and first ever recorded windsurfer is Alfred Seltz Jr. Al Seltz first pioneered windsurfing in the late 1950’s with a documented picture in May of 1961. While others used sailing surfboards, Al Seltz was the first to stand up on the board, making him one of the inventors. Seltz first began windsurfing on Lake Le Homme Diu near Alexandria, Minnesota.
Lewis A. Whinnery, an Ohio native, came to Alexandria to the Bellanca aircraft factory to make aircraft parts out of fiberglass. Whinnery then began making boats out of fiberglass, called his creation Sail King, and thus began providing sailing surfboards to Seltz. Whinnery helped to organized Viking Reinforced Plastics, in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, and hired Al Seltz as a sales manager. Seltz expanded distribution from the Dakotas to Michigan. The sailing surfboards quickly gained popularity as sail surfing became a new sport.
Seltz took on this new sport with enthusiasm, and began racing sailing surfboards. On a whim, Seltz tried standing up on the board. This was revolutionary to windsurfing and changed the sport into what it is today. The new position changed the center of gravity on the boat, allowing the surfer to harness more of the wind power. Seltz began windsurfing in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. The first documented recording of Seltz windsurfing was in May of 1961, and the photo was used in an ad in the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune around June 1, 1961.
1. Through My Eyes : I started this winter with a desire to feel like a kid again with my passions.
How can something still be fresh after decades of doing it?
I learned that if your in love with something give it your all or don't do it at all.
Here's my new segment from the scariest action packed winters I've ever seen.
I would like thank my parents for showing me this amazing sport. My sponsors for having my back through the ups and downs. And Jesus for letting me come up from the worst hold down of my life.
Shot and edited by Take Shelter Productions with Cody Carter.
2. JAVANESE ESCAPADE: Windsurfing trip in Java with the 3 professional riders : Leon Jaemer, Florian Jung and Camille Juban
3. Brittany: In December I got the ferry over to France and drove to meet Thomas in the North of France. We scored a few waves and was the first chance for me to test out the new camera and capture Thomas in some pretty perfect conditions.
For filming it was pretty horrendous with constant squalls and nowhere to hide. But despite it the harsh weather the shots came out great with me and the camera gear surviving the day.
