2011 SURFER Poll AI Breakthrough Performer: John John Florence

Whether they happen at your local beachbreak or on the World Tour, breakthough performances are why we're all surfing. Three-time World Champ Andy Irons bulit a career on incredible performances, and our AI Breakthrough Performer Award honors a surfer who's made such a statement with their surfing in the past year. After the year he had in 2011, John John Florence was a no-brainer. He won back-to-back contests at Pipeline, qualified for the ASP World Tour (and even made the quarterfinals at the Rip Curl Pro Portugal), and put in jaw-dropping performances in both Lost Atlas and Get-N-Classic. By the way, he just turned 19.
